Why School Board Leadership Matters—and What’s Happening This Month in Delaware
Each July, school boards across Delaware take an important but often overlooked step: electing their board president and vice president. These leadership transitions might not make headlines—but they have a big impact on how our schools are governed.
At First State Educate, we believe that strong leadership at the board level is one of the most powerful levers for student success. That’s why we’re spotlighting this month’s leadership elections and sharing why they matter for every student, family, and educator in Delaware.
What Do Board Presidents and Vice Presidents Actually Do?
The board president isn’t just a figurehead. This role sets the tone for how the board operates—both during meetings and in the broader community. Presidents work closely with the superintendent, help set agendas, and ensure meetings are focused, inclusive, and student-centered. They also often serve as the board’s public face, communicating decisions and building trust with families, staff, and stakeholders.
The vice president is equally essential. They provide continuity and backup leadership, step in when the president is unavailable, help track action items, and support a collaborative board culture. When transitions happen—or challenges arise—vice presidents help ensure stability and accountability.
Why This Matters for Delaware
School boards make decisions that affect everything from academic programs and student safety to budgets and community engagement. Strong leadership ensures those decisions are made with integrity, clarity, and a clear focus on student outcomes.
At FSE, we’re proud to support both new and returning board members with training, resources, and tools designed to help them lead effectively. And we know that great leadership starts with the right support.
